Achieve Tampa Bay’s Doula Program provides all-inclusive perinatal support to low income, at-risk pregnant women throughout Hillsborough County. This support includes childbirth education classes, labor and delivery birth support and follow up postpartum support in the home. Healthier Babies – Happier Births “Doula” is an ancient Greek word meaning one who mothers the mother. She is regarded as a “Birth Coach”. A doula assists a woman throughout her pregnancy, labor and birth experience and postpartum period in helping her understand and cope with this major life event. Evidence based research shows that the presence of a doula during labor and delivery may reduce complications and significantly reduce the amount of stress and duration of the labor. It may also reduce the likelihood of drug or other labor-inducing interventions that can impact the health of the new mom and her baby. Skilled practitioners Our doulas have professional training and certification through organizations such as Doulas of North America, International Childbirth Educators Association, The Center for Breastfeeding and the Association of Labor Assistants and Childbirth Educators. They have the tools required to assist a woman in understanding the process of giving birth and can give them information to help make informed decisions. Our Doula Birth Program logo states, “A doula is one more step towards a better birth”. That is our goal, to give women the tools they need to experience a healthy, positive birth outcome.
