In 1988, Hillsborough residents agreed that improving supports and services to our county’s children and families was a major priority for our community’s future. Voters passed a levy of up to 50 cents per $1,000 of assessed property taxes for children’s services aimed at prevention and early intervention. Thus, the Children’s Board was established in 1989 with a mission of improving the lives of children and families in Hillsborough County.
Today, the Board continues this mission by funding local prevention and early intervention supports and services, as well as providing: Leadership , Planning / Analysis , Advocacy, Technical Assistance / Training , Information and Education , and Research and Evaluation
Currently, the Board manages a budget of $30 million and funds approximately 70 programs that provide prevention and early intervention services. In 2004, Children's Board-funded agencies helped more than 85,000 children and families throughout our community.
Our Vision In keeping with our commitment to Hillsborough County, the Children's Board developed a 10-year strategic plan to further develop a comprehensive system of services and programs for pregnant women and children from birth to age eight, and their families. This particular age group was selected because research shows that a healthy start in life leads to a successful adulthood. Caring adult relationships, proper health care and intellectual and social stimulation are critically important in the development of very young children. The Children’s Board is dedicated to ensuring the most positive and nurturing experiences for our community’s youngest citizens, our children.
