The Family and School Support Team is a multi-disciplinary team comprised of schools, community and family representatives. The FASST team utilizes strengthbased planning to support the children and their family. Strength-based planning is a process through which a comprehensive plan to support all family members is developed, implemented, and reviewed. The process recognizes, combines, and uses the strengths of the family, school system, community services, and existing family supports to achieve goals established by the family. In strength-based planning, the family, school system, and community service providers link strengths across systems to establish a collective force to reduce or eliminate barriers faced by the child and family. It involves sharing responsibility among the family, support coordinator, school, community service providers and the families existing support systems. Participation in the FASST program is voluntary, however permission must be obtained from parent(s)/guardian(s) prior to making a referral. The FASST program seeks to strengthen the functioning of children, families and communities by enhancing the protective factors and reducing factors which place them at risk. At the family level, the objectives intended to meet these goals focus on increasing academic achievement, decreasing disruptive behavior, increasing families’ ability to provide safe, structured environments and increasing families’ involvement in school. At the system level, objectives focus on increasing the system’s responsiveness to families, to improve access to services, increase the continuity of care, and enhance system integration. The FASST program at The Children's Home, Inc. places a strong emphasis on education by providing extensive learning assessments conducted by a team of learning specialists and other professionals. These assessments help the child, family, and schools better understand the specific learning strengths and challenges which are unique to the child, and identify strategies and interventions to heighten the child's success in the classroom setting.
