Early Literacy Department Early Literacy is what children know about reading and writing before they actually learn to read and write. The mission of the Early Literacy Department within the Library is to introduce young children to reading to help prepare them so they will be ready when they start school.
Born To Read Program encourages parents to read to their children encourages families to use the library to check out booksand other materials to use with their children. The program provides classes to expectant parents,/caregiversof young children and staff of community agencies. Born To Read provides information on how to read to children and why it is so important to do so. Age appropriate books, finger games, songs and stories are all part of the Born to Read package of activities. Many of these activities increase language and communication skills of young children. Born To Read Information packets are distributed to local hospitals, health clinics, teen parent programs, community agencies and families through the Developmental Screening program.
Early Literacy Workshops are available to child care providers, community agencies and parents on literacy activities to help children so they are ready to start school.
